It is a small town with a great past. The name of the town was derived from the Roman Emperor Hadrian who ruled in second century A.D. It became an Ottoman town in 1361 and for several decades, it was the Ottoman capital.

The best Ottoman monument in the town is Selimiye Mosque. It is the best work of Sinan, the greatest Ottoman architect ever. It was built in the reign of Selim, the son of Suleyman the Magnificent. The great temple that dominates the town took just 5 years to build in 16th century. Sinan called this mosque his master piece.

There are some other Ottoman institutions in the town. Rustem Pasha Caravanserai from 16th century and Uc Serefeli (Three Balconied) Mosque across Selimiye Mosque are beautiful art pieces. Uc Serefeli Mosque was built in the reign of Murad II in mid 15th century. It has three minarets with different artistic styles and one of them has three balconies.
